01A practical Day 1 route
- 01Cut enough nearby trees to keep the fire safe, then stop chopping and scout the closest buildings before daylight is gone.
- 02Collect Rabbit Feet while looting; the Pelt Trader reportedly asks for one on the first visit on Day 2.
- 03Craft the Map early so you can lift fog and mark your route. Upgrade the bench for a Compass and Sundial before making long trips.
- 04Bring useful fuel back to camp and replant Saplings near the base; do not burn every log needed for benches, walls, and later defenses.
- 05Before night, return to the campfire, store spare supplies, and agree on the next destination with your team.
02Choose the first bench crafts by your run
A Map is the most consistently recommended early craft because it reveals explored terrain and helps you find your way back. A Compass and Sundial improve navigation and timing. After that, choose defense or production based on your problem: a Log Wall or Bear Trap if enemies reach camp; Farm Plots or a Crock Pot if food is the bottleneck. Recipe costs and bench tiers change, so use the live crafting menu as the source of truth.
03Make the Pelt Trader visit count
PC Gamer reports the Pelt Trader first arrives on day 2 and asks for a Rabbit's Foot. Collect one while exploring if safe, then choose a tool upgrade that solves your current bottleneck. A Good Axe speeds wood gathering; the Old Flashlight may be less urgent if you already found one.
04Build for information and recovery
A map is a low-cost early craft according to the cited survival guide. Once you can navigate confidently, upgrade the crafting bench toward useful utility such as a compass, sundial, cooking and storm protection. Keep bandages for revives and serious trouble rather than spending their escalating materials on every minor hit.
05Threat card - The Deer
Keep the campfire burning and do not wander far without knowing your return route. If the Deer is active while you are outside, prioritize reaching safety over finishing a loot sweep. The fire going out at night is especially dangerous; keep emergency fuel reserved.
06Threat card - The Owl
PC Gamer Jan 2026 guide says the Owl cannot be killed and that shining a flashlight can stun it. Avoid wasting ammunition. When it is active at night and you lack a flashlight, staying near camp is safer than chopping in darkness.
07Threat card - The Ram
The same guide reports the Ram around the Volcano biome and describes a warning before it charges. When targeted, run diagonally and put obstacles between you and its charge path; avoid planting valuable defenses where it can smash through.
08Threat card - Cultist invasions
Expect invasions to grow more demanding over time. Keep healing supplies available for revives, use terrain and base defenses to control approach lanes, and do not spend all your crafting materials before the next attack cycle.
09Before a child rescue
- 01Read the camp poster and use its direction and distance; fixed map coordinates do not carry over between runs.
- 02Try to arrive during daylight with a return route already visible on your Map. Listen for crying when you get close.
- 03Treat the reported fire level as a gate estimate, then check the actual map and game state. Clear guards one at a time and collect the key dropped by the last animal.
- 04For the later bear groups, bring healing, armor, ammunition, and traps; do not start a fight at night or while separated from your team.
- 05After a rescue, remember that the reported day counter advances faster each night, while night threats also become more dangerous. Update your tracker and plan the next run accordingly.
